The power of ideas in scientific research
One believes that the use of the sophisticated equipment is an important factor in the success of the scientific research particularly in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. Not all the good research depends solely on modern equipments. Sometimes, in my opinion, the idea of research is the most determining factor compared to the equipment to produce high impact researches. I always tell my students that the scientist is a ‘problem seeker‘, not ‘problem solver‘. Below (please click the link at the end of this article) is the publication was published when I was a postdoctoral researcher at Hokkaido University. Through a good idea the research was published in a prestigious journal. Here, we only use a gas chromatograph as the only one analytical instrument. This proves that this manuscript published not based on the use of sophisticated equipment but based on a novel idea. In this research, we proposed a new concept in heterogeneous catalysis termed as as ‘Phase Boundary Catalysis‘. Another example of our research was powered with a novel idea was ‘Synthesis of well-aligned titanium dioxide with very high length to diameter ratio synthesized under magnetic field‘. In this paper, we demonstrated for the first time to control the synthesis of titanium dioxide containing surfactant by a simple technique under a magnetic field. This research was a topic of my PhD student.
Visiting Bandung and Surabaya
For five days, I have been visiting Bandung and Surabaya, Indonesia. On March 4, 2013, I attended the 7th South East Asian Technical Universities Consortium (SEATUC) meeting at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia. On March 5, 2013, I spoke as a Keynote Speaker at the 7th SEATUC symposium at ITB. On March 7, 2013, I flew to Institut Teknologi Sepuluh Nopember (ITS), Surabaya, as an external examiner of a proposal examination of a Ph.D. student there.
I felt like returning home to Bandung. I met my relatives who worked there, Dr. Rino Rakhmata Mukti (chemistry lecturer at ITB), Dr. Afnimar (geophysics lecturer at ITB), Dr. Irdam Adil (geodesy lecturer at ITB), Dr. Erhamwilda (counseling lecturer at UNISBA) and Dr. Rizal Sani (lecturer at Pusat Pengembangan Penataran Guru Teknologi).

Half-day workshop on research progress
I was invited as a facilitator in the half-day workshop on research progress with Dr. Hendra Hermawan’s students. Research topics of Dr. Hendra’s students are on the design and synthesis of degradable implant biomaterials.
11th Symposium of Research Center for Solar Energy Chemistry, Osaka University
I was invited to speak at the 11th Symposium of Research Center for Solar Energy Chemistry, Osaka University which was held at Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka University on 20 February 2013.
It is also interesting to note that I and Prof. Michio Matsumura (Director of Research Center for Solar Energy Chemistry) have initiated the collaboration between UTM and the Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka University when I invited him to UTM in 2006. The Memorandum of Understanding between the two institutions was signed in 2008. Graduate School of Engineering Science, Osaka University has sent nine professors to the UTM as visiting professors and UTM sent its staff to pursue their Ph.D. study at Osaka University. UTM has also sent students for attachment and a short visit to Osaka University under UTM Global Outreach Program.
