“Preserving and archiving our memories is crucial for the future. To understand our present and future direction, we must first know where we’ve been.”

I was born on May 6, 1969, and have established myself as a researcher in advanced materials and heterogeneous catalysis. I currently serve as a Professor and Head of the Integrated Laboratory at Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) while also holding positions as an Adjunct Professor at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) and a Guest Professor at Osaka University. I pursued my undergraduate and graduate studies in chemistry and materials engineering at the prestigious Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). I graduated with a B.Sc. degree in 1992 and later earned my M.Eng. (cum laude) in 1995. I completed my Ph.D. in zeolite chemistry at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 1998. After completing my doctorate, I undertook postdoctoral studies as a UTM Postdoctoral Fellow and a Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoctoral Fellow at the Catalysis Research Center (CRC) at Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan. I also spent six months as a Center of Excellence (COE) Visiting Researcher at the CRC. In 2002, I joined the Ibnu Sina Institute for Fundamental Science Studies at UTM, where I made significant contributions from 1998 to 2022. I began as a postdoctoral researcher and eventually became a full professor, serving in that capacity for 12 years. In 2022, I transitioned to Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) in Indonesia, continuing my career as a full professor. My dedication to advancing my field led me to serve as a visiting scientist at the Institute for Heterogeneous Materials Systems, Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin for Materials and Energy, Germany, in 2015.

My alma mater and current affiliation, directly or indirectly, have a positive impact on my life.

  • BUKITTINGGI (1969 – 1974)

[1969] I was born in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra, on May 6th. My father served as the Dean of the Faculty of Literature and Arts Teaching at the Institute of Teacher Training and Education (IKIP – Institut Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan) in Bukittinggi, which is now known as Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP), Indonesia, from 1969 to 1971.

  • PADANG (1974 – 1987)

[1974] Parents move to the Institute of Teacher Training and Education in Padang.

[1974 – 1976] Kindergarten, PPSP (Proyek Perintis Sekolah Pembangunan) IKIP (Institut Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan) Padang.

[1976 – 1981] 1st – 5th grade, Sekolah Dasar PPSP (Proyek Perintis Sekolah Pembangunan) IKIP (Institut Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan) Padang.

    [1981 – 1984] 1st – 3rd grade, SMP Adabiah Padang, West Sumatera (secondary school).

    [1984 – 1987] 1st – 3rd grade, SMA 3 Padang, West Sumatera (senior high school).

  • BANDUNG (1987 – 1995)

[1984 – 1987] I am an undergraduate student at the Department of Chemistry, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia. Initially, I attempted to join the Department of Mechanical Engineering at ITB but was unsuccessful. Fortunately, I was able to join the Department of Chemistry, which was my second choice in the entrance examination (Sistem Penerimaan Mahasiswa Baru).

[1988] I attended the Faculty of Dentistry at Padjadjaran University from 1988 to 1989. Unfortunately, I was unable to complete my studies there and dropped out during the second semester. The challenge of attending two universities, Padjadjaran University and the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), simultaneously proved too great.

[1993] Married to Terry Terikoh, on April 26th.

[1993 – 1995] Master of Engineering student of Materials Science and Engineering Program, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia. Graduated Cum Laude. Finish in 1.5 years.

[1995] Despite being accepted as a Ph.D. student at the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), I failed to secure a scholarship from the Indonesian government’s University Research for Graduate Education program. That same year, I also missed the opportunity to be sponsored by ITB for my Ph.D. studies at KU Leuven, Belgium. At that time, I was a prospective lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, specifically in the Materials Engineering Program, at ITB.

[1995] Farid Rahman Hadi was born on April the 2nd at Borromeous Hospital, Bandung.

  • BANDUNG (1998)

[1998] Failed to secure a lecturer position at the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering Program, ITB, despite passing the Civil Servant exam (CPNS). The economic crisis was impacting Indonesia at that time. This is the primary reason I left ITB.

  • SAPPORO (1999 – 2002)
