“Preserving and archiving our memories is essential for the future. To understand our present and navigate our future, we must first recognize where we have been. My journey as an academic, researcher, and lifelong learner reflects this philosophy, and I aim to inspire others through my story.”
I was born on May 6, 1969, and have established myself as a researcher in advanced materials and heterogeneous catalysis. I currently serve as a professor and head of the integrated laboratory at Universitas Negeri Malang (UM), and I hold positions as an adjunct professor at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM). I pursued my undergraduate and graduate studies in chemistry and materials engineering at the prestigious Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB). I graduated with a B.Sc. degree in 1992 and later earned my M.Eng. (cum laude) in 1995. I completed my Ph.D. in zeolite chemistry at Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in 1998. After completing my doctorate, I undertook postdoctoral studies as a UTM Postdoctoral Fellow and a Japan Society for Promotion of Science (JSPS) Postdoctoral Fellow at the Catalysis Research Center (CRC) at Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan. I also spent six months as a Center of Excellence (COE) Visiting Researcher at the CRC. In 2002, I joined the Ibnu Sina Institute for Fundamental Science Studies at UTM, where I made significant contributions from 1998 to 2022. I began as a postdoctoral researcher and eventually became a full professor, serving in that capacity for 12 years. In 2022, I transitioned to Universitas Negeri Malang (UM) in Indonesia, continuing my career as a full professor. My dedication to advancing my field led me to serve as a visiting scientist at the Institute for Heterogeneous Materials Systems, Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin for Materials and Energy, Germany, in 2015 and as a guest professor at Osaka University from 2022 to 2024.

My alma mater and current affiliation, directly or indirectly, have a positive impact on my life.

BUKITTINGGI (1969 – 1974)
[1969] I was born on May 6, 1969, in Bukittinggi, West Sumatra. My father served as the Dean of the Faculty of Literature and Arts Education at the Institute of Teacher Training and Education (IKIP – Institut Keguruan dan Ilmu Pendidikan) in Bukittinggi. This institution, now known as Universitas Negeri Padang (UNP), Indonesia, held this role from 1969 to 1971.

BANDUNG (1987 – 1995)
[1984 – 1987] I am an undergraduate student in the Department of Chemistry at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Indonesia. Initially, I aspired to join the Department of Mechanical Engineering at ITB but was unsuccessful. Fortunately, I was accepted into the Department of Chemistry, which was my second choice in the entrance examination (Sistem Penerimaan Mahasiswa Baru).
[1988] I attended the Faculty of Dentistry at Padjadjaran University from 1988 to 1989. Unfortunately, I was unable to complete my studies there and withdrew during the second semester. Balancing studies at two universities, Padjadjaran University and Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), simultaneously proved to be too challenging.
[1993] Married to Terry Terikoh, on April 26th.
[1993 – 1995] Master of Engineering student of Materials Science and Engineering Program, Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia. Graduated Cum Laude. Finish in 1.5 years.
[1995] Although I was accepted as a Ph.D. student at Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), I was unable to secure a scholarship through the Indonesian government’s University Research for Graduate Education program. In the same year, I also missed the opportunity to receive sponsorship from ITB for my Ph.D. studies at KU Leuven, Belgium. At that time, I was a prospective lecturer in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, specializing in the Materials Engineering Program, at ITB.

BANDUNG (1998)
[1998] I was unable to secure a lecturer position in the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering Program, at ITB, despite having passed the Civil Servant Exam (CPNS). At the time, Indonesia was experiencing an economic crisis, which played a significant role in my decision to leave ITB.
